Fujitsu launches the FWM8BLZ14T, an ultra-slim profile IoT Tag for asset tracking (EMEA)

Hoofddorp, The Netherlands, November 8, 2022 – Fujitsu has launched the FWM8BLZ14T IoT Tag, a compact and waterproof smart tag intended for asset tracking across a range of industries.

Powered by Wirepas mesh technology and Bluetooth® Low Energy (BLE), the FWM8BLZ14T IoT Tag has been designed to fit the requirements that other IoT tags cannot. Due to its small and flat design, the FWM8BLZ14T IoT Tag can be affixed easily on devices that require tracking and in small, awkward spaces, such as in-between infusion pumps in hospitals.

It is, therefore, ideal for a number of industries that require asset tracking technology, such as industrial, warehouse, medical and logistics.

Main Features

The FWM8BLZ14T IoT Tag is the result of many months of industry research and testing on Fujitsu’s part, and responds to the high demands of the industry.
Those demands include:

  • Small and slim enough so that it doesn’t protrude from the asset or disturb its handling or storage
  • Ability to be attached to any surface, whether it is flat or rounded, plastic, metal, wood or plaster
  • Extended battery life, which will help to limit maintenance
  • Low cost and durable

After discussing industry requirements with integrators and end customers, Fujitsu designed a tag that includes all requirements.
The key features of the FWM8BLZ14T IoT Tag include:

  • Wirepas Mesh enabled
  • A battery lifetime estimated at three years, while positioning every 10 minutes, which is long enough to cover an average maintenance cycle
  • An IP67 rugged and waterproof rating so it can be washed to be used in environments like hospitals, healthcare or the food industries
  • Battery is replaceable by opening the upper lid
  • A slim 5.8mm design for easy integration and no protrusion from the asset while still retaining a long battery life

Other features include a variety of fixing methods, through integrated screw holes, an optional bracket, or directly on the surface using double-sided adhesives. The replaceable battery ensures sustainability as the end of the battery’s life cycle doesn’t result in the end of the tags life cycle - a rare feature for an IP67 rated device.

Customizable features

There are various customizable features on the FWM8BLZ14T IoT Tag.

The first is an on/off button, which means the battery life can be saved when the tag is not in use. However, this button can double up as a call button if needed. For example, after cleaning the asset, end users could use it to send out a message that it is now available for use.

The tag’s built-in LED can also be used for various purposes. For example, a light blink feature on the asset that has been selected, so the user does not need to search which asset to pick-up. It could also be used to confirm the on/off mode or indicate that the battery needs to be replaced.

Industry use cases

In many industries and services, there is a necessity to track assets. This can be done by attaching an active “tag” to the asset.

The new tag’s compact design and feature set make it a very adaptable device and so, can be applied to a range of industries and environments from healthcare and hospitals to factories and warehouses.

There are a whole host of use cases with various requirements. The assets that could use the tag to be tracked include tools, trolleys, measurement devices, forklifts, wheelchairs, medical machine (ECGs, infusion pumps) and all in a variety of sizes and shapes, from centimeters to meters shapes and from flat to spherical or cylinder.
